Crash Course: Italian

Crash Course: Italian is the culmination of a semester living in Florence, Italy,  and studying at Studio Art Centers International. This poster provides easy access to grammar and pronunciation, vocabulary, and commonly used phrases in a quick-reference format. I collected content from my professors, neighbors, and peers and produced the original version as a 5-color screenprint.

How might we simplify the practical basics of speaking Italian into a visual resource to facilitate communication for students and travelers?

process:

This poster came to fruition as a means of addressing the needs of my fellow students (and myself) as newly-minted Italian speakers. The goal of this project was to create something that could be offered to new students the following semester; a compilation of necessary phrases for daily living, studying, and navigating the streets of Florence.

challenges:

How do I make this happen?

As an amateur Italian speaker, I was limited to my textbook and interactions with Florentine locals to outline the contents of this visualization. Thankfully, with my Italian professor’s help, I was able to confirm all of my translations and examples to ensure their accuracy.

outcomes:

The completed poster provides content and examples across five topics: pronunciation, basic conversation, sentence structure, navigating restaurants, travel.
